Yesterday I had the privilege of meeting Cris and Mario’s friends, Claudia and Antonio- A beautiful and loving couple that welcomed us warmly. This would be my home for the next 2 nights and I couldn’t have been happier. Today began with Cris and Mario picking me up and us heading to buy breakfast that we would prepare at their house. The 3 of us then went to pick up the rest of the girls from their hostel so we could go have breakfast. José, Mario and Cris prepared a beautiful breakfast for us which consisted of bread (a staple here in spain, you have bread with everything it seems), eggs and bacon which was so lovely. After breakfast we headed to the “Museo del comercio” which directly translates to “Trade Museum”. This was my absolute favourite thing from the trip thus far. We were welcomed affectionately by the staff and proceeded to watch a short video narrating the birth of industrialisation and commercialisation in Spain. During our tour, we had the pleasure of role playing typical day to day interactions that would take place during the earlier centuries which made the tour very interactive and consequently my favourite thus far.
After the museum tour, we headed to the supermarket with Mario to buy ingredients for lunch. My main mission on this trip is to immerse myself fully in Spain’s rich culture and I believe one of the best ways to do that is by eating! So that being so, at the supermarket I picked up some fruit that I haven’t tried before (yellow dragonfruit & custard apple). My review? Yellow dragonfruit- 8.5/10 & Custard apple- 6/10. The custard apple would’ve gotten a higher rating if it didn’t smell like Omaere (A traditional sour milk drink from back home) which I found peculiar for a fruit. We then got home and some girls dove right into preparing lunch. I’m so appreciative and grateful for every single person in this group, their dedication and efforts are something I could never trade for anything and is so invaluable, wishing them all nothing but beautiful things that this life has to offer. But yes, while some girls were cheffing it up in the kitchen, I accompanied Cris and Mario to the laundromat and after that a China-shop which is probably going to be my most visited kind of shop while in Spain because I love a good deal. We then got home and had the delicious lunch that the girls prepared. While having lunch, Cris brought out a little basket with her things that she wanted to share with us and I got a beautiful watch that I love so much! I think just knowing it came from Cris is what makes it so special to me and make me cherish it always.
After lunch, we headed to our second tour for the day which was to the Catedral de Salamanca which was absolutely breathtaking. Every single view i’ve seen since i’ve gotten to Spain has been surreal and I can’t help but get overwhelmed with gratitude for just being able to experience it all. Everything is so gorgeous and I feel like pictures couldn’t do it enough justice at all. As we were touring the cathedral Mario and I noticed that there were coins on the little balcony outside of the windows and I couldn’t help but believe it is a good omen so spoke well over the coin and did the same.
After this, we were invited by Mario’s 2 Tia’s and Tio f(Tia- Auntie/ Tio-Uncle) churros and chocolates at Plaza Mayor which was amazing. Seeing what the plaza looks like at night with all its lights is a truly priceless experience. We then took to the streets again and I was able to buy myself a “University of Salamanca” T-shirt which I truly love so much. I felt the need to make that purchase since this city has left a huge impression on me, so much so that I intend on coming back to do my masters over here! We then headed for a last quick tour of the night at the Universidad de Anaya de Salamanca and we saw all the names written on the walls of all the PHD holding alumni which I thought was a great gesture of appreciation for the different students.
After that it was time to head back to my home for dinner. We were once again received tenderly by Claudia and Antonio at their home where they had prepared a delicious pumpkin soup which was buenísima (buenísima- very very very good). We listened to music as we ate, had a chat and just had a good time, something we’ve been doing effortlessly since we arrived here. Mario, Cris and the girls then left and I got to chitchatting with Claudia and sharing and trying my yellow dragonfruit together, they both liked it. We spoke about life, the essence of it and I quickly realised why her home felt so warm. She speaks with so much love behind her words and they are charged with so much intention for good and we share the same sentiments about what it means to be, which is basically to love. The couple then gave me a tour of their crystals. I ended up being given 4 rose quarts crystals which really shows the type of people those two are, full of love. We then decided to call it a night as Claudia and I both had to be up early the next morning.
