Dear gentle reader,
It seems I’m destined to be late every time I write. Can you imagine? I didn’t shower today of all things! But let me take you through the day.
We started with a delightful breakfast at Carmen’s lovely home. It was a feast of variety, and the atmosphere felt warm and inviting. As if the food wasn’t enchanting enough, Anina and Aurore treated us to a serenade, with Carmen accompanying them on the guitar. Their voices? Absolutely heavenly just how I imagine angels would sound. It was a magical start to the day.
After our leisurely and rather late breakfast, we made a quick stop back at the retreat. Here’s where things got a bit chaotic we managed to misplace our room key, and, to top it off, I accidentally locked us out of the room. As I write this in real time, that issue remains unresolved. Something to worry about later, I suppose.
We then headed to a picturesque beach, a tranquil haven where the water was slightly warm, and the gentle rhythm of the waves was music to my ears. The sound of the stones being swept up and shifted by the waves was mesmerising, though stepping onto the stony surface felt like sinking into quicksand. The scenery was breathtaking, but our time there was brief as we decided to move to another beach where swimming was an option.
The drive to the second beach was nothing short of magical. We found ourselves winding through a landscape that looked like something out of a dream mountains towering around us, dotted with stunning homes that left me in awe. When we arrived, the beach was as charming as the journey itself, framed by those majestic mountains. The wind was a bit too chilly for me to swim, and I must confess, I don’t know how to swim anyway. Instead, I watched as others splashed, laughed, and played in the water. There was something deeply wholesome about witnessing such simple, carefree joy.
Next, we made a stop at a local grocery store to stock up on breakfast essentials and, of course, snacks. Let’s just say we might have gone a little overboard with the snacks. In the van, we shared them enthusiastically it felt like an impromptu tasting session. Honestly, we should have filmed a “Taste Spanish Snacks with Us” video. Perhaps next time!
Back at the retreat, I finally had the chance to shower (what a relief!) and freshen up for dinner. The evening promised to be special, and it didn’t disappoint. We dined at a fancy restaurant with a cozy ambiance, complete with a heater that added an extra touch of comfort. The highlight of the meal? Authentic Spanish paella. I opted for the seafood variety, and it was nothing short of divine. Every bite was a revelation. To make the experience even better, we were treated to complimentary croquetas, which were equally delicious.
After dinner, we dropped Carmen off and made our way back to the retreat. It felt wonderful to crawl into a warm bed, especially with the cold, wet weather outside.
Denia, in all its beauty and charm, was truly an unforgettable experience.
