Good morning! Today marks our third day in Spain, and the day has only just begun. It’s quite cold outside, with a light drizzle of rain. As we start the morning, we’re enjoying a typical Spanish breakfast: madeleines, coffee with milk, orange juice tea, and unsalted butter on toast.
After breakfast, we hit the road towards the center of the village of Sanabria. Our first stop was to grab a few light snacks before heading to San Martín de Castañeda to take in the view of the lake. However, upon arrival, we were greeted by dense fog—so thick that it obscured the lake entirely. Fortunately, there were images displayed that gave us an idea of how it looks in summer. For those curious, you’ll find these images on our blog. I’ll keep you updated as the day progresses, but for now, it remains cold, foggy, and slightly rainy, although we’re enjoying ourselves so far.
Sanabria itself is a marshy, mountainous area with an abundance of trees. The dreary weather might be due to the fact that it’s autumn and winter is approaching, but despite the conditions, we’re taking full advantage of the opportunity to explore and discover new landscapes.
Next, we visited El Lago de Sanabria, a location featuring a beach, surrounding mountains, and a stunning view. Despite the cold, we managed to capture plenty of content and photos. You’ll be able to view these here, as well as on our Instagram page.
From there, we made our way to Ribadelago, a village marked by a tragic flood in 1959. The reservoirs that usually held back water from the mountains failed, and within five minutes, the village was submerged. 144 people lost their lives. In 1995, a statue was erected in their memory, with their names engraved on a stone.
We paused at a café for a light lunch, enjoying Cola Cao while snacking on charcuterie and empanadas we had brought along. It was a cozy break before we continued with the day’s adventures.
Later, we had the pleasure of dining at our professor’s mother’s home. The meal was abundant and delicious: a pasta gratin with chorizo and cheese, accompanied by bread, ham, salad, smoked chorizo, lard, and meatballs. We left with full stomachs and very happy hearts.
Afterward, we visited Alcobilla, an area known for its centuries-old chestnut trees and an ancient, charming church. The autumnal scenery, with its mix of orange and green foliage, provided a stunning backdrop. We spent some time there, taking numerous photos and enjoying the serene atmosphere.
To close the day, we headed to El Castillo de los Condes de Benavente, in Puebla de Sanabria. Though we arrived too late to tour the castle, we admired its impressive exterior along with a beautiful church featuring a striking bell and clock. Perched above the village, the castle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. We also strolled through the village’s vintage streets, which exude both charm and beauty.
We finished our day having another amazing dinner at the Professor mother’s house, trying her awsome albóndigas (meatballs)
